The scientific name for the Yellow Eyed Penguin is Megadyptes antipodes. Their Maori (New Zealand native) name is Hoiho.

Unfortunately, the Yellow Eyed Penguin is an endangered species, it is considered to be one of the world's most rarest penguins.

The most accessible locations on New Zealand's South Island to view the yellow eyed penguins are in Oamaru, on the Otago Peninsula near Dunedin, on the beach at Moeraki, and in the Catlins. They are however also found on Stewart Island, Auckland Island, and Campbell Islands. As opposed to many other species of penguins who nest in colonies, the Yellow Eyed Penguin prefers solitary nesting in the forest or scrub.

This species of penguin has a yellow band which runs from the rear corners of the animal's eyes in a semi-circle around the back of its head
