A boardwalk takes visitors into the depths of some of the world's largest Kauri trees found throughout New Zealand which are located in the Waipoua Forest in Northland. The sunlight shimmers through the massive branches on the Kauri Trees and during the onset of fall, the leaves slowly begin to break free and drop onto the boardwalk below.
The Tane Mahuta, the Te Matua, the Four Sisters and the Yakas Kauri are the prominent Kauri trees found in the Waipoua Forest when venturing along the boardwalk. Signs are posted throughout the forest which explains in detail the size, age and history of these trees in the largest remaining area of natural forest in Northland, New Zealand.
First bought from the Maori people in 1876 and then becoming part of the State Forests Act in 1885, the Waipoua Forest was proclaimed as a forest sanctuary in July of 1952 after many years of pressure from the public. Today, the Waipoua Forest has become a main tourist attraction while visiting Northland, New Zealand.
