Sulphur deposits, streams and the steam rising from beneath the ground are part of the volcanic landscape of the active marine volcano known as White Island. White Island is located in the Bay of Plenty off the North Island of New Zealand and tours leaving from Whakatane are available to people who want to explore the unique volcanic landscape of the island.
The sulphur has seeped through the earth's crust on White Island as gas and blanketed the landscape. The volcanic landscape still bubbles in mud pools, fumaroles still steam, craters are very active, thermal streams meander around the island and volcanic rock formations all make up the intriguing landscape of White Island.
When visitors disembark onto White Island, gas masks and hard hats are provided for safety reasons. The volcano is still closely monitored as mother nature acts in strange ways which could cause White Island to erupt at any given time.
Streams and sulphur deposits are part of the landscape of White Island, an active volcano, Bay of Plenty, East Coast, North Island, New Zealand.
