The pale blue hue of the sky over the Catlins Forest at Porpoise Bay and Curio Bay in Southland on the South Island of New Zealand begins to disappear as the storm clouds move in. The sunset filters through the stormy clouds creating an opening which reflects off the surface of the ocean across the horizon.
The weather changes very quickly over the Catlins Forest at Porpoise Bay and Curio Bay and stormy weather can quickly darken the horizon. This type of weather is fascinating at sunset when various shades of color burst through the looming clouds.
Located at the south eastern corner of the South Island of New Zealand, Porpoise Bay stretches from the entrance of Waikawa Harbour at the North Head along the shoreline to the South Head. The Catlins is popular due to its beautiful sunsets and the marine mammals which reside along this coastal region. One species is the Yellow-eyed Penguin along with the Hector's Dolphins and New Zealand Fur Seals.
