For New Zealand it all started in 1904 when a school teacher by the name of Isabel Fraser returned from China with a supply of tiny black seeds. They were originally called Chinese Gooseberries and the first plants bore fruit in 1910.
The Chinese Gooseberry became known as Kiwifruit in 1959, then in a ploy to create a name for the fruit which spoke of its many qualities in one simple word, the name Zespri was formed - actually from a computer!
