The sulphur deposits on White Island in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of NZ surround the rocks which have been ejected from the volcano. The smell of sulphur surrounds White Island especially near the crater where gas and steam still burst up from the depths of the Earth's crust.
The gases are mainly made up of steam, carbon dioxide and sulphur dioxide which leaves the landscape on this volcano the colors it displays today. The only way to White Island to wander and explore this volcano is by helicopter or boat run by a private operation as it sits 48 kilometers offshore.
