A boat tour idling in Wilson Bay gives passengers a look at the steam rising off Crater Lake on White Island in the Bay of Plenty off the North Island of New Zealand. This is the largest crater on the island which is now home to one of the most acidic lakes found throughout the world.
Steam rises off the lake as well as from the fumaroles and visitors to White Island are required to wear a gas mask to ensure their safety from the heat and sulfurous gas emerging from the landscape. Crater Lake has been formed from the various eruptions over the years which is continually changing the landscape. The crater on White Island is simply a summit on this submarine volcano as only a small portion of its entirety is seen above sea level.
Three major explosions, one in 1886, 1914 and 1953, have created the naturalness which visitors see today while on the journey across the water aboard a White Island boat tour in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand.
