A helicopter remains stationary on White Island waiting for passengers to return from their tour of the active volcano in the Bay of Plenty off the North Island of New Zealand. In the backdrop, the steam and gases rise from a large crater which create a smell of sulphur as they emerge through the Earth's crust.
The helicopter tour leaves from Whakatane, Rotorua and Tauranga when the demands of a tour are requested and is approximately two and a half hours in length, with an hour used to explore White Island on a guided tour. Hiking boots are advisable for passengers as the walk on the volcanic landscape of White Island is very uneven. Included with the tour, each person receives a hard hat and gas mask as safety precautions while on White Island and safety procedures are outlined for the helicopter flight.
