White Island is an active volcano in which tourists can visit via a boat tour which departs from Whakatane in the Bay of Plenty on the North Island of New Zealand. Once on shore of White Island, a fascinating feature is Crater Lake, the most acidic lake in the world, where steam rises hundreds of feet into the air, but masks are supplied as the fumes can be very powerful.
Crater Lake was formed by a series of eruptions on White Island and its depth and size is always altering and in return steam vents have been created above the surface of the lake. Between 1981 and 1983, White Island was very active causing dramatic changes in the landscape, but a daily watch is kept of the activity on White Island and tours are considered to be extremely safe.
