Since the Whale Rider movie was released and this village served as a filming location, the town of Whangara on the East Cape has become a famous destination in New Zealand.

Seen from atop the hillside, the small community of Whangara on the East Cape on the North Island of New Zealand, sits along the scenic coastline of the Pacific Ocean. A village once unknown, was used as a location in the movie the Whale Rider, opening the eyes of many people to the beauty of the area.

Life is very easy and laid back here and filled with an intriguing past and present of the Maori culture, language and tradition. The red roofs belong to the local school and a meeting house, with other surrounding buildings being homes to the local residents.

Many fans of the highly praised movie, the Whale Rider, now seek out this location while traveling on the North Island of New Zealand.
