Gillespies Beach near Fox Glacier in Westland on the South Island of New Zealand is a beautiful scenic area especially during the sunset hours. The beach is blanketed with smooth, round quartz rocks laying atop the black sand, as the waves moving in off the Tasman Sea break onto the sparkling shoreline.
The Fox Glacier created this beach over 14,000 years ago when the movement of the landscape was rearranged. Word spread of gold in the area and prospectors began showing up everywhere. It became a gold mining town for a short period of time but that was short lived as the gold was scarce. Today visitors to Gillespies Beach can stroll along the coastline for miles watching a sunset highlight the sky as the beach and water shine.
