From the upper terminus where the cable car loads at the Wellington Botanic Gardens in Wellington on the North Island of NZ, the scenery of the city is beautiful. One cable car starts at the Wellington Botanic Gardens while the other leaves along the tracks at the other end and they pass in the middle. This form of transportation started in 1902 and over the years there were upgrades done but as 1978 came around, the cable cars were closed until 1979 when new steel cars were put in place.
Passing through the center of Wellington City onwards to downtown Lambton Quay, the cable car track spans 628 meters and the cars make about 90 trips a day back and forth along this route. Approximately a million people ride the cable car every year as many of the local residents commute daily to Kelburn, the city center, the gardens or the university.
Wellington is the capital of NZ and the urban region of the city has a population of about 382,000 with about 62,000 who work in the central business district. The scenery from the hill where the Wellington Botanic Gardens sits is beautiful as one looks out over the greenery, the buildings and the water.
