A species which is listed as vulnerable, the Weka is an endemic bird which has disappeared from some areas of New Zealand.

An endemic bird to New Zealand, the Weka is a member of the rail family who although is generally a curious, inquisitive, and feisty bird, can also be shy and retiring. They are often seen darting from one cluster of scrub to the next.

The weka is also known as a woodhen. They are a flightless bird which feeds on a variety of small critters such as lizards, mice, snails and even the odd rabbit. Being omnivores they also feed on fruit.
