Weka Bird Marlborough Sounds South Island
Photo & Vacation Spot

A species which is listed as vulnerable, the Weka is an endemic bird which has disappeared from some areas of New Zealand.

An endemic bird to New Zealand, the Weka is a member of the rail family who although is generally a curious, inquisitive, and feisty bird, can also be shy and retiring. They are often seen darting from one cluster of scrub to the next.

The weka is also known as a woodhen. They are a flightless bird which feeds on a variety of small critters such as lizards, mice, snails and even the odd rabbit. Being omnivores they also feed on fruit.

Weka, Gallirallus australis, at Titirangi Bay Campground, Marlborough, Marlborough Sounds, South Island, New Zealand.
