At dusk, dark blue hues decorate the sky over the Wairarapa coastline where the beacon atop the Castlepoint Lighthouse shines for the passing vessels. The original beacon was first lit in January of 1913 with changes being done in 1942, 1950, 1960 and again in 1998 when the Castlepoint Lighthouse became automated. This was a sad time for the lighthouse keepers as their jobs were abolished leaving the beacon to flash on its own lighting the way for 26 nautical miles.
A balcony encircles the beacon atop the Castlepoint Lighthouse which stands at a height of 23 meters and 52 meters above sea level. Owned and operated by Maritime New Zealand, the lighthouse still aids mariners across the treacherous waters off the Wairarapa coastline and is managed from a central control room in Wellington.
The village of Castlepoint is home to about 1,600 local residents but during the summer months, the coastline of Wairarapa, New Zealand becomes a vacation spot for many. The lighthouse has become a popular tourist attraction and has been nicknamed "The Holiday Light".
