This particular trail in the Waipoua Forest in Northland on the North Island of NZ, will take visitors to the 2nd largest Kauri Tree, the Te Matua Ngahere. The sign points people in the right direction and provides information on the length of the walk.
The name "Te Matua Ngahere" originated from the Maori people which means "Father of the Forest". Although it is not the tallest tree in the Waipoua Forest, it does have the largest circumference with a trunk girth of 16.41 meters. An exact age of the tree cannot be confirmed, but it is believed to be approximately 2,000 years old.
This trail is an easy trek and is suitable for wheelchairs, strollers or people who have difficulty judging uneven surfaces while walking. There are various trails throughout the Waipoua Forest to reach different Kauri trees, but each sign along the way will ensure visitors will see the most important ones.
