When the tide recedes in Southland, New Zealand, the coastline at Waipapa Point displays kelp clinging to the rocks where various sea creatures live as the Waipapa Point Lighthouse guards the area. A sandy beach near the lighthouse is a beautiful place to explore especially at low tide.
The Waipapa Point Lighthouse has watched over this coastline since 1884 as these waters can be very difficult and dangerous for water vessels to navigate. Waipapa Point was the scene of New Zealand's worst civilian shipping disaster in 1881 where 131 lives were lost when the Tararua was wrecked.
