Sitting peacefully amongst the greenery in their habitat at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand, two Eastern Water Dragons remain still to ensure there is no danger lurking about. These reptiles love to relax in branches which hang over a stream, river, marsh, lake or creek where they tan themselves in the sun but have a fast escape route into the water if needed.
Being able to stay submerged for up to 60 minutes, the nostrils on the Eastern Water Dragon are situated on the top of its snout to enable its breathing pattern while swimming. The reptiles have a dark stripe which travels around its head from each eye and along its back. The Eastern Water Dragon is one of the most impressive types of reptiles with their distinctive markings, scales and size which can reach 20 centimeters, not including their tail.
Visitors to the Auckland Zoo while visiting New Zealand, may have to look closely around the Eastern Water Dragon's habitat as they can easily camouflage themselves. Any sign of danger and these reptiles will disappear beneath the surface of the water.
