A vibrant blue and white sign erected along the coastal shores of Castlepoint in Wairarapa, New Zealand, warns people of the danger of a Tsunami and what to do if one hits. The region around Castlepoint is made up of many volcanoes and if an earthquake happens, there is a good chance a Tsunami will follow.
Following an earthquake, people should head to higher ground and stay off the coastline which includes the Pacific Ocean, rivers or inlets. The area should be clear of people for at least one hour after an earthquake to ensure a Tsunami is not coming.
The farther the center of the earthquake, the more time there is to flee but if an earthquake is centered locally around the North Island of New Zealand, a Tsunami can be upon Castlepoint within minutes. This warning sign should be adhered to if there is any type of earth movement while visiting Castlepoint.
