Visitors to Castlepoint in Wairarapa on the North Island of New Zealand should not be alarmed at the large Tsunami Hazard Zone sign located along the waterfront. This sign was erected to advise people of what to do if a strong earthquake has hit the area, something which is not totally unrealistic due to the amount of volcanoes located in New Zealand.
If people feel any signs of an earthquake, an automatic reaction should be to head to higher ground as one is never sure of the aftermath of any acts caused by Mother Nature. The Tsunami Hazard Zone tells people not to return to the area for at least one hour after an earthquake to ensure there is not any danger coming.
If the earthquake is centered farther away, the more time people have to flee, but that does not mean the warning has been dropped. If residents or tourists are in the immediate area when an earthquake happens, the Tsunami Hazard Zone should be adhered to.
