High on a cliff, overlooking the Otago Peninsula off the South Island of New Zealand, stands the Taiaroa Head Lighthouse. Since 1865, the lighthouse has aided vessels across these rough and hazardous waters as the entrance to the Otago Peninsula was extremely hard to locate.
Lighthouse keepers manned the lighthouse up until 1921 when a signalman took over. In 1989, the Taiaroa Head Lighthouse become automated and today the light still flashes over the Otago Peninsula to make the waters safer for incoming vessels.
