While visiting the small township of Colac Bay located along the Southern Scenic Route in Southland, New Zealand, it is hard to miss the sculpture of a man surfing. The top of the waves are crested as this figure in a red and black wetsuit stands atop his surfboard surfing the waves.
The town of Colac Bay hugs the coastal shores of Southland where sandy beaches are found and many surfers take to the water. Colac Bay is an exposed beach with a fairly consistent surf and surfers can be seen here throughout the year. This area is very rarely crowded but people should be warned there are strong rips, rocks and sharks around these waters.
For those visitors who prefer to stay on land, they can capture a picture of this surfing sculpture and browse through the craft shop or enjoy a meal at the local pub, cafe or restaurant. A campground is located along the waterfront where many families can enjoy other popular activities such as fishing and diving.
