Although its a location renowned for extremely cold weather, the Nugget Point Lighthouse in the Catlins District along the Southern Scenic Route in Otago, NZ, looks out over the South Pacific Ocean and is the ideal spot to watch a sunrise or sunset. In this picture, a sunset spans across the sky while the clouds thicken overhead bringing with them the threat of a storm.
Nugget Point Lighthouse was named due to the small nugget like rocks which surround the point, clearly visible at low tide. The lighthouse has watched over these waters since 1870 when it was manned by a lighthouse keeper up until 1989 when the light became automated. Every 12 seconds, two flashes are sent which can be seen for 19 nautical miles aiding vessels in their travels.
Both sides of the rocky outcrop are blanketed in lush greenery and a trail leads the way to the lighthouse. Each sunset is different around this coastline, an area often frequented by various types of sea animals which can be seen from the lighthouse cliff.
