The lantern glows from the top of the Cape Reinga Lighthouse in Northland, New Zealand as dark clouds move in over the water blocking out the beautiful hues of the sunset. Across the horizon, pinkish tones filter through the breaks in the clouds and the yellowish/orange hues define the sky as the area clears in between each cloud patch.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse has watched over these treacherous waters where the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean meet since 1941 when lighthouse keepers kept the lighthouse working until it became automated in 1987. The lantern atop the Cape Reinga Lighthouse illuminates the area for approximately 19 miles and flashes every 12 seconds, giving vessels plenty of time to react in case the waters are uncooperative.
