Sulphur mining equipment which has been abandoned, sits on the volcanic landscape of White Island in the Bay of Plenty, NZ as the crater continues to steam in the background. The sulphur mining equipment was once used on a daily basis between the years of 1898-1901, 1913-1914 and again in 1923 to the 1930's.
Sulphur was plentiful during the first few years, but mining became dangerous as mudflows and collapsing craters took the lives of some of the workers. Small rail trucks were used to transfer the sulphur elsewhere onto White Island but the findings soon became rare and the equipment was left in the atmosphere of sulphuric gasses to corrode on the island.
White Island in the Bay of Plenty, NZ is still a very active volcano but is closely watched to ensure the activity does not increase as visitors come to explore the crater and wander about the old sulphur mining equipment.
