Brown, yellow and orange hues blanket the rocky landscape on White Island in the Bay of Plenty, NZ where the sulphur deposits have naturally been created in crystal form from the earth's crust. The sulphur has come up from the ground as gas from the volcano and laid to rest on the landscape.
From the inner crater on White Island, the sulphur gas is a toxic fume which can be hazardous to people's health and a gas mask should be worn when viewing the steaming crater. The landscape of the active volcano of White Island still bubbles with mud pots, steaming fumaroles which have been decorated with sulphur crystals, thermal streams and volcanic rock formations, making this tour a fascinating adventure while visiting the Bay of Plenty, NZ.
