In the Pridelands region at the Auckland Zoo in Auckland on the North Island, NZ, a Springbok (antelope) rests on the dry, barren terrain.

Lazing about his habitat at the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of NZ, a Springbok, also known as an antelope, gives visitors plenty of time to capture his picture. The Springbok is a medium sized species of antelope which is dark brown, reddish/tan and white in color.

A female Springbok will grow to be about 30-44 kilograms and the male being a touch heavier reaching up to 48 kilograms in weight. Both genders have horns about 35 centimeters in length but the males are thicker while the females are weaker and more delicate looking.

In the wild, the Springbok resides in dry regions of south and southwestern Africa where they live to be about 10 years of age. They feed primarily on tender grasses, shrubs, succulents, roots and bulbs which are found throughout their habitat in the Pridelands at the Auckland Zoo in NZ.

When not lazing about, a Springbok can be seen doing high leaps, a behavior known as pronking where they can reach up to 11 feet high in the air. In open spaces while running free, a Springbok can reach top speeds of about 80 kilometers an hour.

A Springbok is not a common type of animal seen often by humans, so while visiting NZ, be sure to stop at the Auckland Zoo to take a picture of these unique creatures.
