The Ring-tailed Lemur is considered as an endangered species and visitors to the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand should consider themselves lucky to watch these animals roam about their habitat. Their long striped tails similar in color to a raccoon, have 26 black and white rings which starts with white and ends at the tip of the tail in black. They use their tails for balance, to aid in carrying their special scent and to keep track of each other when spending time on the ground.
Their coat is greyish brown in color with white fur around the face area except for their black markings surrounding their yellow eyes and their black noses. Their fingers are long and slender with sharp, flat nails all which are used while eating fruit, their main source of food.
With only about 30 lemur species remaining in the wild of Madagascar, Africa, it is rare for them to be seen by humans. Even those are in danger of survival as their natural environment is becoming destroyed by human interference, so be sure to visit them at the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand.
