Heading towards Lake Benmore, the unique blue color of the Pukaki River flows through the Mackenzie Basin in Canterbury, New Zealand passing three hydroelectric stations. As you drive through Canterbury, the Pukaki River makes up a stunning part of the landscape as the blue water flows rapidly stirring up whirlpools and a foamy surface after the control gates at the hydroelectric stations have been fully opened.
The glacier water gives the river its beautiful blue hue which has been created by the finely ground rock particulars released from the glaciers. Running alongside the canal, is a road which has been flooded and closed a few times when the river has reached its maximum height./p>
