A beautiful sunset becoming filtered out by the cloud formations moving in over the Catlins coastline at Porpoise Bay in Southland, New Zealand.

The bright light at sunset filters through the clouds which have begun to thicken as darkness sets in along the Catlins coastline at the Petrified Forest at Porpoise Bay in Southland, New Zealand. The petrified forest is known to be about 180 million years old and when the tide is at its lowest, the geological history of New Zealand emerges. Porpoise Bay spans from the entrance of Waikawa Harbour at the North Head around to the South Head with the tops of the cliffs being blanketed in lush greenery.

The Catlins is a breathtaking place to watch a sunset over the Pacific Ocean, but a beautiful day can quickly change as the weather around this coastline is known to be very temperamental. A few species of wildlife in the Porpoise Bay and Curio Bay area include Yellow-eyed Penguins, Hector's Dolphins and New Zealand Fur Seals.
