In the foreground, two small children dig in the black iron sand at Piha Beach on the North Island of New Zealand while crowds of people head to the water to cool off. There are patrolled swimming areas along the beach as the surf, rips and currents are very powerful and dangerous even for the best of water lovers. When the water is at its lowest, there is a beautiful beach at the northern end of Piha Beach and one at the southern end, both being used by the crowds of people.
Piha Beach is a 45 minute drive from Auckland, making it easy for families to pack up for a fun filled summer day. This small coastal village situated in the Waitakere Ranges has camping, restaurants, shops, accommodations and all the amenities needed to live in a laid back atmosphere.
