Two figures of Little Blue Penguins are clearly visible on the street sign in the town Oamaru, Otago on the South Island of New Zealand. A colony of these penguins reside along the coastal shores of Oamaru and often they come out of the water and make their way across the road.
Being the smallest penguin species, Little Blue Penguins stand about 25 centimeters high making them hard to see during the evening hours and travelers should pay close attention to these street signs. They waddle to the water at first light and head back to their burrow at dark after feeding all day. The Little Blue Penguins are seen more often from September through to January but the street sign is valid all year as these animals are permanent residents along this coastal area.
