These Oriental Small Clawed Otters at the Auckland Zoo on the North Island of New Zealand are two of a group which reside in this habitat on a regular basis. One of these two decides to enjoy a meal while the other one tries to sneak in for a few bites.
The Oriental Small Clawed Otters are often scouting around their habitat for a meal as the keepers will hide their food in floating logs or put live eels in their zoo environment. After a good meal, the Oriental Small Clawed Otters will enjoy some fun while performing gymnastic maneuvers by rolling and tumbling or tobogganing on their stomachs in muddy areas.
Favorite meals for these animals are fish, eels, frogs and shellfish which aids them in their growth to maturity. As an adult, the Oriental Small Clawed Otters will weigh approximately 5 kilograms and measure about 0.9 meters in length.
The Otters live in freshwater near dense plants and shrubs and their habitat at the Auckland Zoo is a near mirror image of what their natural environment would be. Often referred to as Asian Small Clawed Otters, these cute animals are fun to watch while visiting the Auckland Zoo in New Zealand.
