Orangutan can also be spelt Orang-utan, or orangutang derived from Malay and Indonesian words which mean "Man of the Forest".

A generally solitary animal, the Orangutan has become a highly endangered animal due to their habitat destruction, uncontrolled burn off of forest, a thriving orangutan pet trade, body parts used as souvenirs.


The Orangutan is only found in Borneo and Samatra where they call small patches of rainforest, mountain forest, and swamps their home. Madju the baby orangutan was born in November 2006 as part of an ongoing co-ordinated breeding programme at the Auckland Zoo.
