The opening at the entrance is 23 meters high and 45 meters across and once visitors make their way into the cave, the underground geothermal world is apparent.

A shallow pool of clear, sulfate-rich, warm acid water sits at the entrance to the cave, a place which holds many legends and myths. When one holds their left hand in the water, a wish can been made, one where magic makes them come true. In early years, the Maori people used the warm water to wash their clothes in and today, the minerals in the water aid in the cleaning and shining of jewelery.

Orakei Korako is an active geothermal area which sits along the banks of the Waikato River and the Ruatapu Cave is definitely one of the highlights. In the world, there are only two caves to exist in a geothermal field and the Ruatapu Cave is one of them.
