The town of Omapere is one of the settlements that services the Hokianga region in the Far North District of Northland and is considered the gateway to the Hokianga.
The Hokianga was once a river valley that was filled in and drowned by the Tasman Sea at the end of the last ice age. There is a sand bar at its mouth that makes it at times a treacherous piece of water during adverse weather, having claimed a number of laden ships - the last being in 1928.
