The architecture of the Oamaru Opera House was designed by John Megget Forrester and some contractors who won the bid, began construction on this elegant two storey stone building. The Oamaru Opera House in Otago on the South Island of New Zealand was first opened in October of 1907 and has been used over the years by council groups, political groups and law offices, but now its' primary use is for theatres and movies.
An Edwardian baroque styled building was a popular New Zealand design up until 1914 which was used for many of the historic civic and government buildings. Starting in January of 2006, millions of dollars have been put into desperately needed renovations to bring this historic building up to modern day specifications with completion date being sometime near the end of 2008.
