First lit on July 4, 1870, the Nugget Point Lighthouse stands over a rugged stretch of coastline which features many small islets, rocky outcrops, and reefs. Originally the lighthouse operated by burning oil from a 9 metre high tower, then in 1949 it was converted to diesel generated electricity until being connected to mains power. Nugget Point Lighthouse was fully automated and monitored from Wellington in 1989.
Nugget Point Lighthouse which receives its name through the small nugget like rocks which extent out from the point in the Catlins along the Southern Scenic Route, Catlins Highway, on the East Coast, South Island, New Zealand.
