The Cape Reinga Lighthouse is a landmark on the North Island of New Zealand where it watches over the joining of the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea. From the lighthouse hill you can watch these two bodies of water crash together during a tidal race creating a treacherous passing for some water vessels.
The original lighthouse was built on Motuapao Island in 1879 but access to the island was difficult and in May, 1941, the Cape Reinga Lighthouse was rebuilt at its present location in Northland. The hill in which the lighthouse sits upon is also the ideal place to watch a sunset create its pastel colors across the northern sky.
