Situated on the cliffs overlooking the hazardous waters of the Tasman Sea and the Pacific Ocean, the Cape Reinga Lighthouse has stood in this location since 1941. A popular New Zealand icon, many travelers to Northland on the North Island of New Zealand, venture out to the lighthouse to admire the beautiful coastal scenery.
The Cape Reinga Lighthouse replaced the Cape Maria Van Deimen Lighthouse which stood on Motuopao Island as it was difficult to reach due to the rough seas. For safety reasons, it was moved to Cape Reinga, a location which turned out to be much more practical than its island location. The lantern fittings from Motuopao Island were used on the new lighthouse although a new 1000 watt electrical lamp was installed which spanned across the water for 26 nautical miles.
Lighthouse keepers were removed from the Cape Reinga location in 1987 and the lighthouse became automated. In 2000, the lens and lamp were removed and a 50 watt beacon adorns the top of the Cape Reinga Lighthouse which can be seen for 19 nautical miles.
Today, there are very few who come to Northland, New Zealand who do not make a trip to the Cape Reinga Lighthouse to see this incredible location on the North Island.
