Ninety Mile Beach in Northland, New Zealand is not a full ninety miles but only 55 miles or 88 kilometers. No one is quite sure why and how the beach received its name, but there are several theories, one being about the missionaries who rode horse back traveling 30 miles per day. This took three days from one end of the beach to the other for the horses, given it the name of Ninety Mile Beach.
People come to Ninety Mile Beach to surf, swim, collect shells or stroll peacefully along this long stretch of sand, but most tourists come here to see the dunes which appear as a desert landscape. The area has become fairly popular over the years because of these unusual dunes and people have used them for body boarding.
