A cluster of small purple colored wildflowers bloom across the volcanic landscape on Mt. Ruapehu in Tongariro National Park on the North Island of New Zealand. Each of the flower petals are a light purple hue and as they meet in the center, darker purples surround the yellow centers.
Spring and summer brings out vibrant colored wildflowers which flourish in the warm sunlight on Mt. Ruapheu. As visitors hike through Tongariro National Park, they are amazed at the assortment of wildflowers which have pushed their way through the volcanic soil. Mt Ruapehu has not erupted since 1975, but since 1861, the volcano has erupted about 50 different times and some of these eruptions have destroyed all the wildflowers and plant life which has resurfaced after many years.
