Milford Sound in Fiordland National Park in Southland, New Zealand is one of the most well known fiords throughout the world and one that can be accessed by a road. The scenery along the drive to Milford Sound is spectacular and once the steep rock faces become apparent, one knows they have started their journey to the Fiord. Some of the rock faces rise to 3,900 feet with the Elephant and the Lion Mountain being two popular ones.
A 33 mile hiking trail begins the Milford Sound Track which brings about 14,000 visitors every year to Fiordland National Park in New Zealand. As you hike through this wilderness, the scenery consists of lush forests, sub-alpine scrub and various types of flora and fauna native to New Zealand.
Fiordland National Park covers approximately 2.6 million hectares and has been named the world's top travel destination and the most famous one found throughout New Zealand.
