Tourists to Matheson Lake in Westland National Park on the South Island of New Zealand stop along the wooden pathway to admire the scenery of the rainforest, the lake and Mount Cook towering above the trees. Lake Matheson is dark brown in color due to the surrounding rainforest and is situated near the Fox Glacier.
Approximately 14,000 years ago, Matheson Lake was made when Fox Glacier retreated and left a huge crater in the ground. Soon this hole filled with water and is now home to a variety of water birds and long finned native eels.
