Dressed in traditional Maori clothing, a group of warriors pose for this picture at the Wairakei Terraces near Taupo on the North Island of New Zealand. These Maori warriors are tattooed, an important part of their culture which ranks these men in their tribe. On the warriors, their faces and legs are tattooed while the Maori woman are usually only tattooed on their faces below their chins.
Spears and knives are held by some of the warriors which were used in the early years when the Maori people hunted for their own food. Surrounding the warriors are Pous or totems which have been hand carved by the Maori people, often taking months to complete as the details are very explicit.
