A place of national and historical significance in New Zealand is the Waitangi National Reserve where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed by the Maori and British Crown - giving the British Government sovereignty over New Zealand. The treaty grounds have several buildings as well as a war canoe which is intricately carved with Maori art.
