The water along the coastal shores of Maitai Bay on the Karikari Peninsula in Northland, New Zealand is only inches deep at low tide, baring all the unique rock formations. Just above the water level, a mass of beautiful red flowers on the Pohutukawa trees blossom from November to January making the coastal shores of Maitai Bay picturesque.
Before the flowers open on the trees, they appear as white buds and slowly begin to gape open to show off their yellow tips on the bright red stamens making the flowers look like twinkling lights. Many people from New Zealand call these trees the New Zealand Christmas Tree as they sparkle, many growing up to 20 meters in height.
