While driving along the road in the town of Oamaru, Otago on the South Island of New Zealand, pay attention to the bright yellow and black sign. Little Blue Penguins are known to use the road for crossing as their colony is located along the coastline of Oamaru.
The Little Blue Penguins are the smallest penguin species in the world and only reach a height of 25 centimeters and one kilogram in weight which makes them hard to see if driving too fast during the evening hours. The best time of year to view the Little Blue Penguins is from September to January but the crossing sign is valid all year as many of these cute animals make an appearance throughout the year.
