Volunteer life guards patrol Piha Beach near Auckland every weekend and everyday of public holidays between October and March/April. The life guards are identified by their bright yellow tee shirts and red shorts - which are the same colour as the flags.
Piha Beach which is situated on the West Coast of the North Island of New Zealand, is a particularly challenging location for the life guards to patrol given its rugged coastline and size of the surf. It has been the scene of many rescues and major incidents over the years.
