On the surface of Lake Pukaki at the Pukaki Outlet in Canterbury, New Zealand a whirlpool has formed where the sunlight glitters off the blue colored water. A whirlpool is a fast mass of rotating water usually caused by conflicting currents. At Lake Pukaki, a whirlpool is commonly seen near the outlet where the dam controls the lake's surface elevation when it releases water to the power hydroelectric stations along the river.
Lake Pukaki is fed by the Tasman River which was created by the Hooker and Tasman Glaciers. Spanning a distance of about 80 square kilometers, Lake Pukaki is surrounded by picturesque scenery consisting of Mt. Cook, small islands and lush greenery.
