The wilderness of Fiordland National Park in the heart of Te Wahipounamu in Southland, NZ is beautiful during the summer months when the forest flourishes in bright green hues. On route to Lake Marian, a trail leads visitors through the rain forest where a diverse range of flora and fauna are found.
The start of the Lake Marian trail is a short distance from the Hollyford Road in Fiordland National Park. The trail will cross over a river, through the forest wilderness, past beautiful waterfalls and then continue on to a steeper slope taking about 1.5 hours before reaching Lake Marian. The trail opens up to the beauty of Lake Marian located in the Darran Mountain range which was formed by glacial movement. A challenging trek, suited for people who have a fairly good fitness level.
Fiordland National Park is located on the southwest corner of the South Island and is the largest national park found throughout NZ. The park covers approximately 1.2 million hectares and throughout the area, there are about 500 kilometers of walking trails.
